Submit an RTI Request
Apply in writing or online (where available) with a nominal fee, clearly mentioning the information required.

The Right to Information Act, 2005 is a significant legislation enacted by the Government of India to promote transparency and accountability in the working of public authorities. It empowers Indian citizens to access information under the control of public authorities to make the government more open and answerable.
Under the RTI Act, any citizen can:
- Request information from government offices
- Inspect official documents and records
- Obtain certified copies of documents
- Inspect government works and take material samples
Each public authority is required to appoint a Public Information Officer (PIO) to handle RTI applications. The requested information must be provided within 30 days, or within 48 hours if it relates to life or liberty.
If the applicant does not receive a response or is dissatisfied with the information received, they have the right to file a first appeal and then a second appeal with the Information Commission.
The RTI application can be filed in writing or online (where applicable), along with a nominal fee. Certain categories of information, such as those affecting national security or personal privacy, are exempt from disclosure.

What Information Can You Seek?
Under the RTI Act, any citizen can request information from government offices, inspect official documents and records, obtain certified copies, and inspect government works or take material samples. This covers most records held by public authorities, except those specifically exempted under the Act (such as matters of national security or personal privacy).
Timelines and Responsibility
Every public authority is required to appoint a Public Information Officer (PIO) to receive and respond to RTI applications. The PIO must provide the requested information within 30 days, or within 48 hours when the information concerns the life or liberty of a person.
Appeal Mechanism
If an applicant does not receive a response within the stipulated time, or is not satisfied with the response, they may file a first appeal with the designated Appellate Authority. If still aggrieved, a second appeal can be made to the Information Commission as per RTI Act provisions.
